The activities related to reptiles and amphibians in Romania are carried out based on the following laws:
1. Law 13 of 1993 by which Romania ratifies the Berne Convention (ANNEX 2 – strictly protected species of the fauna; ANNEX 3 – protected species of the fauna);
2. European Directive 92/43/EEC (ANNEX II – Animal species of community interest the conservation of which requires the designation of special conservation areas; ANNEX IV – Animal species of community interest which require strict protection; ANNEX V – Animal species of community interest the sampling in nature and exploitation of which can make the object of certain management measures);
3. Law no. 462/2001 regarding the state of natural protected areas, the conservation of the natural habitats, of the wild flora and fauna (ANNEX 3 – Animal species the conservation of which requires the designation of special conservation areas and of special bird fauna protection areas; ANNEX 4 – Animal species which require strict protection; ANNEX 5 – Animal species of community interest the sampling in nature and exploitation of which make the object of management measures);
4. Government Emergency Ordinance no. 57/2007 regarding the state of natural protected areas, the conservation of the natural habitats, of the wild flora and fauna, with the subsequent amendments and supplements (ANNEX 3 – Animal species the conservation of which requires the designation of special conservation areas; ANNEX 4 A – Species of community interest – Animal species which require strict protection; ANNEX 4 B – Species of national interest – Animal species which require strict protection; ANNEX 5 A – Species of community interest – Animal species of community interest).

- 3 taxons are critically endangered
- 13 taxons are endangered
- 16 taxons are vulerable
- 7 taxons are near threatened
- 9 taxons are not evaluated
